The effects of Hurricane Dorian were among the worst natural disaster ever experienced in the Bahamas. As a category 5, Dorian struck the Abaco Islands and Grand Bahamas on September 1. The real devastation came as a result of the nearly stationary hurricane track that remained over those islands for more than 24 hours bringing a devastating storm surge to Marsh Harbour along with reported wind gusts well over 190mph. Damage was estimated at over US$7 billion. There were at least 50 deaths in the country.
